Earthquakes hit Washington State May 2017

A series of small earthquakes hit the north part of Washington state during May 2017. Nearly 30 small tremors have been recorded near Seattle. There has been little damage or injury reported.

This seismic action comes on the heel of the Shake Alert Early Warning system that is being developed in Washington and Oregon. The system is scheduled to be completed by 2018.

In contrast to the general trend in earthquake preparedness, the Washington State Legislature passed a Bill 1279 a bill on School Safety Drills. This bill originally stated that schools must in addition to fire drills and such, drills for earthquake and tsunamis. As the bill went through the Senate and Committees that part of the bill was eliminated. School principals still may conduct these kinds of drills but they are not mandatory.
